Vert Mooney, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 27, 1931 to Voigt and Naomi Mooney. His unexpected death came on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. He was married for 56 years to his loving wife and partner, Ruth Grace Mooney. Dr. Mooney was an orthopedic surgeon and for more than 40 years was a leader in the field of orthopedic research. He published more than 225 scientific journal articles, 53 book chapters, co-authored 3 scientific books and an autobiography titled: The Unguarded Moment. Much of his work was ground breaking, particularly in the area of restorative exercise and physical medicine. He was a sought after international speaker with over 215 scientific presentations and acted as a visiting professor to 30 institutions of higher learning. Dr. Mooney received his Orthopedic Surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh between 1960 and 1064, after earning his Medical Doctorate in 1957 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Mooney was Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1967 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He was named one of the 20 most distinguished Orthopedic Surgeons in the Town and Country Magazine Annual Survey in 1989. Among other academic positions, he was professor and Chairman of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Scientific Center in Dallas, and Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of California, San Diego. He also served an appointment by Governor Pete Wilson to the California Industrial Medical Council and was integral in developing the functional capacity evaluation standards for the state. Dr. Mooney was the recipient of the 2008 Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award in Lumbar Spine Research from the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine presented in Geneva, Switzerland. He was Medical Director and a founder of MDRSA/Spine and Sport and the President of the Spine and Sport Foundation. In addition to his professional achievements, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was respected and loved by the international community for his scholarship and creative insight, and by his family and friends for his loving character and gentle spirit. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lynn Ruth Jones, teacher and writer; Mark Vert Mooney, Superior Court Judge; and Mary Jo Lugo, teacher. His grandchildren include Grace Jones Shelton, Patrick Jones, Kenneth Jones, Adams Jones, Kendrick Mooney, Georgine Mooney, MacGregor Mooney, Lauren Lugo, and Amanda Lugo. His great-grandchild is Gloria Shelton.

A memorial service will be held a one o'clock on October 30, 2009 at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Avenue, Solana Beach, CA 92075-2039. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the US Spine and Sport Foundation, 3444 Kearny Villa Road, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92123
